A very successful album, but kind of disappointing for some...

It is important to remember that for some reasons (mainstream and store pressure), the release of the album was advanced by Interscope. The result is that Death Row didn't have time to clear some samples on time, so they dropped some songs (like the famous "The Next Episode"), recorded some others in a kind of emergency. That could explain why Snoop re-used some lyrics from songs they couldn't release, they left unrecorded some instrumentals. For instance, the last minute "Serial Killers" was made of lyrics taken here and there. It could be a reason for Dr. Dre to have given Snoop the beat of "Gz And Hustlas" (recorded in the end of the sequence) which was maybe more likely a Warren G beat he had earlier given to 2Pac for "Animosity" / "Lie 2 Kick It"...  Warren G could be angry against Dr. Dre and Death Row, what could have led to his distancing from the label... even if he will still be featured on some songs like like "Dogg's Day Afternoon" recorded for Dogg Pound's album, of which his verse will be removed...

Another people who worked on the album were unhappy to not having any recognition for what they did... 

In a sense it is the beginning of the end for Dr. Dre at Death Row... Because the album was not satisfying for the critics, people around him were disappointed... He will then concentrate on his own projects, Heltah Skeltah with Ice Cube or his Chronic 2 which will never really be on its way... He will finally give very few to Murder Was The Case soundtrack. He gathered a new team around him in 1995 with Sam Sneed, J-Flexx, Buddha...

• O.G. (Original Gangsta), prod. Daz. Released in The Lost Sessions Vol. 1 (2009, WIDEAwake). Daz remixed the song and added a verse from him for his album Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back (1998, Death Row). Nothing is known about that original...

Return to the origins...

Due to justice troubles (similarly to Snoop and 2Pac...), Kurupt had to go back to his hometown. It was in 1996, maybe in April-May (didn't record a lot at that time) but more likely in July - considering the "Aftershock" DAT with an early August date.

Is it at that time he met Foxy Brown and recorded the freestyle "Nigga Whut ?" Or maybe later in 1997 or 1998...

It is funny to notice that after the peak of Thug Pound recordings in Dec. Jan. 96 and N.Y. 87, Kurupt went to record tracks with East Coast artists, exactly like 2Pac for One Nation, and Dr. Dre in Aftermath "East Coast/West Coast Killaz". Maybe he was not feeling that well in this stupid war mainly orchestrated by Suge Knight and Puff Daddy... Dogg Pound were recording with East Coast artists like Nas and Wu-Tang in mid 95 before the "New York, New York" video.

These recordings are interesting notably for the different kind of music, jazz oriented, what gives an unique material for Kurupt skills.

 The RAM Squad :

The RAM Squad (Richard Allen Mobb) is a Philadelphia group with Boy Backs, Six Nine, Suave, Tommy Hill and also DJ Mizery. They had their first record appearance in 1994 on Philly's rapper/producer Sha'Dasious LP for "Da Whole Shabang". They had their first 12'' the same year : Ramboom, produced by DJ Mizery and Sha'Dasious on which you can hear some echoes of Black Moon/Boot Camp first album. In 1995, they recorded a first cassette album titled The Plague with Bank Ent., finally left unreleased. In late 1995, they dropped a second 12'' Keep It Real/When & Where, first song with the same beat than "Wrekonize" remix by Smif N Wessun - published earlier that year. At the time Kurupt came to Philly, they probably just had finished to rework the album which was finally released as Operation Lock The City, published by Echo International (with no Kurupt featuring on it). In 1997, they released another LP with Thee Album Regardless with notably Bahamadia as guest. In 1999, they published "Mission Impossible" 12'' with Kurupt, and also the B-side "County Ties" recorded in August of 1996 with Kurupt. They had the new album R.andom A.ccess M.oney in 2001. Tommy Hill published a solo project Hilstreetblues in 2002, got shot and killed in 2011.

A different version of the bootleg album

Another hidden gem from Death Row vault...

This album was like a kind of side project directed by Dr. Dre, the same way Snoop Dogg promoted his protégés the LBC Crew - with much more success even if they also couldn't release their first album on Death Row (Haven't You Heard ?) before WideAwake got the rights. 

If some tracks are uncompleted, we can guess that it would have had many Death Row superstars featured : Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, Dr. Dre... and maybe it could have a 2Pac's featuring, who knows, as a gift back for the song "Outlaw Immortalz" he produced for him and his group... Otherwise we could imagine East Coast artists (Kool G Rap, Prodigy and Big Shig (?) appear in the "Lady Heroin" video, but it could also be K-Solo who recorded with the label circa 1995...

The album is uncompleted and maybe even unfinished because some tracks given ("Like Sneed") or reused ("The Heist") would not have been included in it. Moreover, the production was still lacking of a final mixdown, what was supposed to be the Dr. Dre's magic touch. From this state we have, it sounds not extraordinary, but when you think to the explosive result of the Sam Sneed/Dr. Dre association on "Keeps their Heads Ringin", "Natural Born Killaz" and "U Better Recognize", you can't help to think it could have been a very good album. Even if we can admit that the Sam Sneed's style is kind of repetitive, as well in his lyrical style as in his production...

Anyway the album was condemned when Dr. Dre decided to leave the label... 

Sam Sneed, Kurupt & Dr. Dre, circa 95

Sam Sneed (b. 1968, 3 years younger than Dre, 3 years older than 2Pac) is from Pittsburgh and started to produce material for K-Solo before Hit Squad split (cf. I Can't Hold It Back). After that, he was introduced to Dr. Dre and began to work under his wing in his producing team alongside J-Flexx, Mel-Man, Bud'Da... His first work was upon Snoop's Doggystyle in 1993 : he claimed to have worked on interludes and upon "G'z Up & Hoez Down" (but not litterally producing even if his well known phrase "My name is Sam Sneed, you better recognize" appears in "Checkin (skit)"). Then his "The Heist" beat was re-used and improved by Dr. Dre for the superhit "Natural Born Killaz" with Ice Cube finally replacing him. But in exchange, also for Murder Was The Case Soundtrack, Dr. Dre pushed his solo song "U Better Recognize" with his famous title gimmick. The next year, he co-produced the Dr. Dre superhit "Keep Their Heads Ringin" for Friday soundtrack.

After that, he started to record his album with his posse the Street Scholars : Sharief (Killa Ben), Drauma (Stocks McGuire), alongside the other Dr. Dre collaborators team J-Flexx, Mel-Man and Bud'Da. 

When Dr. Dre left Death Row to found his label and recorded his compilation Dr. Dre Presents... The Aftermath, he took all the team with him with the exception of Sam Sneed and J-Flexx who still had a contract with Death Row... (Mel-Man had the song "Shitting on top of the world", Sharief the song "L.A.W.", Drauma co-produced "East Coast / West Coast Killers" and Bud'Da produced or co-produced 6 tracks)... What is less known is that J-Flexx very probably wrote the lyrics of "Been There Done That" (he recorded a version of the song dissing Dr. Dre mainly to have let him hang with Death Row whereas he said him he would solved the contract before leaving...).

Sam Sneed only produced one song for 2Pac right after he arrived in Death Row : "Outlaw Immortalz" (circa the 24th of October) for the shelved album Outlaw Immortalz : Thug Live Volume 2. The song appears in the first tracklist of the album but not in the second one... maybe the beef between 2Pac and Dr. Dre already made him drop the song, but more likely 2Pac decided to give the song to Thug Pound, the Sam Sneed's beat maybe more accurate to the Dogg Pound's vibe. Gonzoe claimed to have recorded a new version of that song, but how can we be sure it is not a later recording, after Sneed left the label in late Feb., or to replace Big Syke after he left circa May or why not in August of 96 for the Outlawz album (his name appears in Ghetto Starz planned guests).

"Like Sneed (Bluberries)" beat was apparently sold to Snoop Dogg & LBC Crew album (Haven't You Heard ?) before being transferred to Tha Doggfather. It didn't bother Death Row people to use Sam Sneed's beat after having beaten him up (so 2Pad wouldn't have dropped the song for that neither) and probably without never giving him money for it... Another funny thing about it is that 2Pac and Snoop recorded a St. Ides Commercial with Snoop referring to this track, maybe not a long time before 2Pac beat up Sneed...

The Sam Sneed's beat up...

The 21st of February 1996, after Snoop Dogg was acquitted, Sam Sneed was invited by Suge to a "meeting" (an ambush, following J-Flexx words), and he showed people the video he made with J-Flexx for "Lady Heroin", the first single of his upcoming first album Street Scholars - probably more or less in the state of this bootleg album. In front of everybody, Dogg Pound, Suge and his Blood circle, many other people from the label, 2Pac started to beat up Sam Sneed (he notably punched him in the eye), what led maybe one Outlawz and more surely Sixx 8 of 6 Feet Deep to participate (he gave him a kick in the butt, from behind...). After that, they forced Sam Sneed with his black eye and other marks to go with them to Snoop's acquittal party (the 21st of Feb.) at the Monty's...

After they watched the video, Suge turns himself to some of his peeps : "were you in the movie ? and you ? No ? Sam, who paid for the movie ? So why are there only East Coast niggaz and no Death Row niggaz in that movie ?" (according the Darryl Harper interview). The video had appearances by East Coast artists like Prodigy (maybe not yet a problem for 2Pac at that time, but Napoleon recorded lines against Mobb Deep in "First 2 Bomb" the 16th of Jan., and they could have already answered to "New York, New York"), Big Shug and Kool G Rap (not a problem in itself, 2Pac always wanted to record with him), and moreover was not paying any kind of reverence to Death Row or West Coast... Adding the fact that Sam Sneed did a cameo in Raekwon's "Ice Cream" video (released as a single in Sept. 95, the 25th - video made probably a little time after that). So they would have been angry for Sam Sneed not chosing his side...

In fact, Dogg Pound people were around the video set and Sam Sneed purposed to Death Row people to come but no one did (according to J-Flexx)... Another explanation is that 2Pac and Suge Knight already had heavy issues with Dr. Dre, and that Sam Sneed being his closer protégé, it was a way to reach him, to threaten him... 2Pac was disappointed by Dr. Dre for him refusing to produce more for him, even pretending to have produced "Got My Mind Made Up" when it was a Daz track... Suge Knight probably guessing Dr. Dre didn't intend to come back to the label...

Sam notably said in a late interview that 2Pac and Suge reproached him to have asked money to produce a track for Snoop (probably "Blueberry" from the LBC Crew original album, recorded in second half of 95, finally released on Doggfather). People also said that Sam Sneed was kind of feeling himself, acting like the big man when Dr. Dre was not there... Daz baby mama also claimed they asked Sam Sneed to confirm Dr. Dre was gay - and maybe him being his boy - what could also be related to the fact that Dr. Dre didn't show at the Snoop's trial, what 2Pac denounced (so as being a coward more than the fact of being gay what was maybe not a problem in itself).

That event could have marked a real change in the musical collaboration, a big disease, with Dr. Dre of course ! but maybe also with the rest of the Death Row team, indirectly with Snoop and the Dogg Pound who were somewhere still friends with their mentor Dr. Dre...

After that, Sam Sneed escaped from Death Row but, still linked to the label by his contract, he couldn't release many things and concentrated on a brain tumor he had to heal...Then he was mainly active as a producer.

Why these tracks from B-Side ? Except for "Blow Your Mind", none of them were included in It's About Time (WIDEAwake, 2010). So maybe they were not planned to be inside the original version of it, maybe Danny Boy still thought to release his eponymous first album in any form...

These tracks have probably been recorded/remixed in 1996, probably not produced by DJ Quik (except Track 6) nor DeVanté Swing (except Track 12), but more likely by Kurt Kobane, Demetrius Shipp & Reggie Moore...

His two first albums being recorded, Danny Boy was probably recording songs for other projects (2Pac's album, Gridlock'd soundtrack...), for his singles b-sides or to improve his album.

These are great songs which prove that Danny Boy was not a chorus guy and was not just a beautiful voice behind DJ Quik productions but a wonderful artist who try new things. It would be possible to add to this selection "Slip 'N Slide (Original)".

This Advance / Slip N Slide EP has been unofficially bootlegged various times with slightly different tracklists (in the Advance Discogs version, "Slip N Slide Remix" is in the 11th position, and the B-Rezell's song "Horny" is mistakenly included in the 10th...). This is simply a compilation of the eponymous single with the officially released songs in various albums between 1994 and 1999.

When you consider this bootleg, it seems Danny Boy took a similar way than Snoop Dogg or Kurupt, leaving Death Row around the same time (c. 1998) to get closer to Rap-A-Lot and then to go back to Death Row circa 2001-2003 with a handful of featurings with Eastwood & Crooked I but a similar fail to release any solo album.

We thought it is much more interesting to use the tracklist purposed by Jay2Chill of Bomb1st Forum (in a thread of June 2023), trying to rebuild the album sequence of September '96, right before 2Pac's death, following newspapers, interviews and other collected info. Doggfather single

The original Doggfather LP : if 2Pac wouldn't have been killed in Vegas...

In 2016, Bomb1st Forum leaked a Bootleg with a compilation of alternate mixes and unmixed songs from Tha Doggfather, and a compilation of leftover tracks. All these unreleased materials are taken from early sequences of recording of the album, mainly from circa summer of 96.

Jay2Chill, in a Bomb1st forum's thread of June 2023, shared his work of reconstruction of what could be the state of the Doggfather album, right before 2Pac's death in early September. This has been deduced from the known tracklists of the DATs and the various info collected here and there in interviews, articles... After Pac's death, Snoop notably took off songs with 2Pac, remixed some other and shelved some which will end up in the SmokeFest World Tour album. More than half of the album was totally changed. We miss only four demo songs (if there are any existing alternate mixes) and a totally unleaked one (we can only hear a bit of it in Smokefest Video - maybe somebody could put the retail vocals of the song over the original beat remade) to get that sequence. It has no interludes, what is often said as a weakest point in the released album.

With this rebuild tracklist, we can listen to a different Doggfather album. Would it have changed the destiny of Snoop Dogg and Death Row Records ?

First steps of the album : Don Corleone & Don Makaveli

When 2Pac joined Death Row label in the fall of '95, Snoop Dogg was still struggling with his justice case (what ended in February of 96). It is said that at that time he had troubles to write new lyrics... 2Pac would even have told him that his original verses in "2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted" were weak, what led him to re-write and re-record his parts (some people even said that this lost original could have become "Wanted Dead or Alive"...). That could explain why 2Pac and Daz wrote reference songs like "This Ain't Livin" and "Street Life" in February-March of 96 when he started recording sessions for Doggfather.

So the Doggfather sessions really started in the end of February of '96, right after the end of the case, in the night of the 20th to the 21st. 2Pac was then recording his second solo album for Death Row (cf. Me Against The World pt. 2). After or before Pac recorded "Changed Man" with Nate Dogg (lyrics that refer to Carlito's Way could be also applied by Snoop's situation), Snoop recorded with 2Pac the freestyle song "If There Was A Cure", and maybe also the first version of "Eastside Party" with Nate Dogg, Daz & Tray Deee. Five days later, he recorded "Just Watching" with 2Pac, the Dogg Pound and Hurt-M-Badd, and 2Pac recorded the reference song "This Ain't Livin'" for him...

But this is mostly the following month (March of '96) that he recorded a first amount of songs for his album : "Gangsta Walk", "May I", "Doggfather", "I Will Survive", "Change Is Gonna Come", "Wake Up", "Come On Home", "Tommy Boy", "Never Leave Me Alone", "2001"... And Daz recorded the reference song "Street Life" for him. In April '96, Snoop recorded new songs : "Gangsta Life", "Smoke Enough Bud", "Dogg Collar", "Doggyland", "Too Black", "Poly High"... what leads him to reconsider the direction of the album.

Corleone's Revenge ? 

This collection of songs was gathered by Bomb1st forum for the 20th Anniversary of the release of Doggfather album. All the tracks included are leftover songs from Doggfather sessions and were then unreleased in their original forms ("Vapors Battlecat Remix" has been released one year later in Neva Left, and was initially planned to be included in Doggumentary EP).

If we put apart the four last songs (used in the Original LP), the album so organized starts by the whole story of the birth of a mafioso, and it ended in "Street Life" by these words : "Corleone, rest in peace". So the subtitle of the known bootleg of Doggfather II, "Corleone's Revenge" could be more than a random title. The Doggfather sessions has enough material to constitute that legendary Doggfather II.

with a selection of featurings, soundtracks...

Was the "real" Doggfather 2 a Pre-Doggfather ?

The commonly known Doggfather II bootlegs, single disc (here) or double disc (available here and there), were constituted of songs taken from SmokeFest album and from various featurings (2Pac, Nate Dogg...), compilations and soundtracks (like "Freaky Tales", "Let Me Hit Something") and some well known unreleased leaked songs (like "Lil Crip A Lot", "Last Man Standing") which are not from Doggfather sessions, but more from Snoop's late times at Death Row or just after he left...

On the contrary, the songs here have been all recorded during the Doggfather recordings (1996), before the final mix which took place after Tupac's death in September '96. They can constitute a full forgotten album, a Doggfather pt. 2 or more exactly a pre-Doggfather. But nothing indicates that Snoop once thought to release a double album or a follow-up to Doggfather album, especially because these leftover songs were about mafioso subjects, that he seems to want to give up... These songs were put aside with the progressive constitution of the album we know and would probably have been given or re-used for various projects even if Snoop would not have left Death Row.

L.B.C. Crew about to become the Eastsiders ?

In the beginning of '96, Snoop & Doggystyle's project L.B.C. Crew went shelved because of Lil' C-Style and Snoop arguing about royalties. So in parallel of his album, it seems Snoop was probably thinking to record a new LBC Crew project without Lil' C-Style who does not appear in any Doggfather sessions (except if we consider that "Doggystyle 96" and "Out The Moon OG" that appear in a July DAT could have been recorded later than 95 - what is not believable). 

The group name "LBC Crew" itself was not used anymore (except by 2Pac in "Untouchablez". In late Feb. - March of 96, Snoop recorded "Eastside Party Original" with Daz, Tray Deee and Nate Dogg, "Eastsiders Original" with Daz & Tray Deee (produced by Soopafly), maybe a new version of "21 Jumpstreet" called "21st Street" with Tray Deee & Daz, "Gangsta Walk" with Dogg Pound, "I Will Survive" with Techniec & Kurupt, "Tommy Boy" with Daz, "Smoke Enough Bud" with Jewell, "Dogg Collar" with Bad Azz & Big Pimpin, and very probably "Word On The Street" with Bad Azz & Techniec...

The group name eventually changed to "Eastsiders", a first version of the group that Snoop will later form with Tray Deee and Goldie Loc. Was that name restricted to Snoop, Daz and Tray Deee or was it supposed to include other close partners for a party album like we chose to consider it. Some songs from one project moved to Doggfather and other came in.

It is funny to notice that "Eastside Party", probably recorded circa end of February of 96, starts in its final mix version (probably mid of 96) by 2Pac's voice (something like "nigga ya yop..."), the exact same mix than in the end of "Initiated Remix" (with the blow sound during the whole song) that has also been produced by Daz.

• The project of that second album evolved from "Dogg Shit" (?) in 1995 (like a Dogg Food leftovers/featurings companion) to "West Coast Aftershock" new album in the summer of 96.
• What happened ? Following 2Pac's death, Death Row's team was very affected and Kurupt decided to leave. The closest thing that could approach the original Dogg Shit / West Coast Aftershock project is the WIDEawake compilation Doggy Bag. But like all releases from that label, the result is... far from satisfying. Songs were taken from various projects from 93 to 98... Finally, the underestimated Tha Last of Tha Pound presents a set of songs taken more or less from that era of recordings - 95 -, at a time the second Pound album was logically titled "Dogg Shit" (after the food they ate in first album...). Without the arrival of 2Pac at Death Row, we could imagine that Daz and Kurupt would have had a project ready to drop in mid '96.

DETAILED INFORMATION

Chapter I : DOGG SHIT

• "Don't Stop (Remix)" featuring 2Pac has been released in Dogg Pound's 2002 but was probably initially remixed for Thug Pound in early 96. In 2004, Daz released the real original version of the song in Tha Last of Tha Pound, with verses from Nas instead of 2Pac, of course recorded before the "New York, New York" controversy.
• "Can't C Me" was later given to 2Pac for All Eyez On Me, we ignore if there is also a Dr. Dre version which could be from 93-94 for Chronic 2.
• Inspectah Deck's verse cut from "Got My Mind Made Up" has been leaked circa ~2010. It was at the end of the song, Inspectah kind of freestyling whereas the beat was finished (we can still hear the first words in the released song). It is said 2Pac replaced Lady of Rage when the song was given to him And 2Pac and the engineers chose to cut the song at the end of the beat for his All Eyez on Me version.
• "It's Going Down" was initially recorded in the second half of 95, finally released in a very close mix in Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back in 1998.
• "Me In Your World" was recorded in Dec. 95 and edited without Rage in the summer of 96 for the album, finally released in Death Row's Greatest Hits in late 96. The original was released in Doggy Bag (2012).
• "Our Daily Bread" was initially recorded in Dec. - Jan. 96 and was also edited in August of 96, Daz removing Rage... Lady of Rage has been removed of 3 Dogg Pound songs ! There should be some argument between them...
• "Started" is a three verses Kurupt song. In the intro, Daz uses the old nicknames. In his first, Kurupt says '95. Second one was re-used on "Trump Tight (Dump On Site)" very likely recorded for Thug Pound in late December 95. So this song was likely recorded in Autumn 95 before 2Pac gave them their new nicknames.
• "Jackmove" was firstly recorded for Thug Life Volume 2 in December 95 as Daz featuring Outlawz. Kurupt very likely added in February 96, the 27th. 
  
• "I'll Do" was released in a close mix in Supercop soundtrack (in June of 96), maybe to promote the forthcoming Dogg Pound album that Daz was still planning at that time. It features Gonzoe and his group Kausion. Gonzoe will record two or three other songs with Dogg Pound, Nutt-So and 2Pac in early 1996 for Dogg Pound/2Pac's project Thug Pound. 
• "N.Y. '87" was recorded the 14th of December 95 with Threat only. 2Pac and Quik added their part a few days later and the song was maybe consecutively given to Thug Pound.
• "The Name & The Rep" is a Daz solo song where he names himself "Dillinger" : the lyrics will be partially recycled in "Roll Wit' Us (Original)" in late 96 so the song could be from circa first half of '96. 
  

Chapter II : WEST COAST AFTERSHOCK

Lady of Rage has been removed of 3 Dogg Pound songs : "Me In Your World" and "Our Daily Bread", "Got My Mind Made Up" ! She was kind of put apart of the label when 2Pac came in... The famous original "Blunt Time" which has 2Pac and Rage is still unleaked... Lady of Rage even said once he destroyed her career (what is not true considering that she released a decent album in 97, contrarily to many Death Row artists who totally disappeared after 2Pac's death...).

 

In this second album, we can see that Dogg Pound initially wanted to create a bridge between L.A. and New-York. Unfortunately, the single "New York New York" (Sept. 17, 1995) created an inverted effect, started a huge feud, the biggest and the most violent Hip-Hop clash that ever occurred, just before Suge Knight went again to see 2Pac in prison and make him sign, a definite enemy of the East Coast... And that's why this original East-West album turned into a war album in late 95 early 96 before again becoming a full West Coast album (West Coast Aftershock).

 

Tha Dogg Pound erased the prints of that old east/west project starting in December of 95 by 2Pac recording with them in "NY 87", "Initiated", replacing Nas in "Don't Stop" and eventually "Got My Mind Made Up" (following what Daz and Snoop pretend). Of course, Foxy Brown, Nas friend and Kurupt's future girlfriend, also disappeared but that song is probably more from 96 (after Pac and Nas reconciled during August ?) or even 97 and it means they kept in mind the first idea of an East/West connection in their album.

A break between two recording sessions

After the releases of All Eyez on Me, the abort of the first Thug Pound project (2Pac seeming to pass from one idea to another very quickly and was not clearly in it after Mopreme being left and Thug Life being ended), the beginning of intense work for Doggfather, after the exile of Kurupt in Philadelphia circa May-June, Dogg Pound started a whole new session in summer of '96, after the release of "I'll Do" in June that could mean a first promo single for the album or the burial of the old project. At the same time, Daz and Kurupt keep on reworking old tracks in order to release them like "NY 87", "Me In Your World", "Our Daily Bread", "It's Going", "Don't Stop"... Maybe Daz also worked on "Initiated" and "This Life I Lead" from Thug Pound... 

 

But like Kurupt said in an interview, Death Row was a question of timeline. When it was the time of Snoop, every produced songs, lyrics, efforts, were for him. Then, it was the Pound. Then 2Pac, then Snoop again... And so many Dogg Pound's efforts from that time were given apart, like for instance "Gigolo" more or less turned into "Groupie" for Snoop Dogg.

Tha Pound & Tha Thug

2Pac and Tha Dogg Pound is not a 1995-1996 story. In early 1993, 2Pac collaborated with Prince Ital Joe ("Thug Life"), Warren G ("My Definition of a Thug", "Lie 2 Kick It") and Nate Dogg ("How Long Will They Mourn Me") for the Original Thug Life project, delayed for sample issues, modified for having been leaked (Natasha Walker heard the Dogg Pound in the studio while recording Doggystyle album listening to her song "Is It Cool 2 Fuck" with 2Pac and Thug Life) and totally shelved because of 2Pac troubles with justice...

In late 93 - early 94, 2Pac gave three songs for Above The Rim soundtrack ("Pain", "Loyal 2 Tha Game" and "Pour Out A Little Liquor") where Dogg Pound also contributed with two of their most famous songs : "Big Pimpin" and "Dogg Pound 4 Life". In the middle of 94, Daz remixed the 2Pac song "Hard on a Nigga" for Murder Was The Case Soundtrack with Snoop giving backing vocals and 2Pac giving a new verse (song finally leftover and released only in 1997 in Gang Related OST). So 2Pac probably recorded directly with Daz and Snoop at that time.

Furthermore, 2Pac and Kurupt have in common to be originated from the East Coast and to have arrived in West Coast around 16, circa 1988. Before them, 2Pac tried to combine East and West in his projects like in his first Thug Life Original  double album concept (West / East) and then in Thug Life Volume One (cf. Volume One sessions) which kept a trace of it. Then like everybody knows, even a few days at the peak of the East-West war reached with his single "Hit 'Em Up", 2Pac started the project One Nation. Exactly at that time, Kurupt recorded his Philly sessions in Philadelphia and two years later he will drop a double album Kuruption ! with one disc subtitled "West Coast" and the other one "East Coast".

In addition to that, we can also notice the influence of 2Pac's style over Daz who progressively took that kind of energetic delivery with one word giving the impression to want to catch and crush the previous one.
